My sons are looking for a dependable chore, planting, haying tractor for a reasonable price (aren't we all). Have run across a cabbed white 2-85 with 5668hrs. Sheet metal cab and tires appear good (haven't been to see it yet). What would be areas of concern with those hrs of use ?

They're a pretty bullet proof tractor with the Perkins engine and tried and tested parts all the way through. I'd love to have a nice one for a haying and planting tractor myself, but the old 1850 Oliver is still running.
Just make sure the Over/Under hydra shift is working OK. Not that they had any inherent problems. One thing when you check that, they go in to free wheeling in under drive. When you shift the regular transmission, you might notice it hangs up just a little with the Over/Under in direct or over. That's normal. They shift best in under drive.
One thing that does start to go over time, and you can't tell until you work one for a few hours, the hydraulic pump will run hot when it starts to go,but I wouldn't worry too much about it. I didn't have to replace the one on my 2-135 until it had over 10,000 hours on it.

Thanks so much for the info. Btw, I had an uncle who moved to Detroit in 1928 and retired from Detroit Edison, moved to Capac in '68/68. Would Capac be anywhere near you?

Thankyou. I always try to figure out where everyone who posts here lives. I live near Lake Erie almost in line with Erie Penn.

There's a sign in St Louis Mi that marks the geographic center of the lower peninsula. I'm about 35 miles southwest of there.

No input from me, but I did note this thread recently asked a question which was unanswered.

I have a 2-105 and an Oliver 1755, which was kind of the predecessor to the 2-85, and have had good luck with both of them. Both are great hay tractors.
As Randy said, I would check the over/under well. If there are any hills nearby, get it on the road in high gear and go through the ranges to check for slippage. The shifts should be crisp under load
Good luck
Pete

Thanks Randy and Pete. A White will be something new for us as we've been Ford for many years. Middle son did buy a NH 6030 a couple of years ago (not quite the same shade of blue) :>)

That thread was regarding the change in the differential carrier. Early 2-85s had a four pinion carrier as did all 2-105s. During 1977 (serial no. 277182 & up according to agco parts book) they changed the 2-85 to a two pinion carrier. I still don't know how much of a concern this is. Passed on the '79 2-85 that I looked at, primarily because it didn't have 3pt hitch.
