1755 steering

1755 serial number 229317-676. There is play between the T shaped piece that the inner tie rods attach to and the shaft that goes up to the steering cyl. This tractor does not have the clamp bolt in the T shaped piece. However, as near as I can tell the casting was made to have a hole drilled through it for a clamp bolt. Can the shaft come out from the top after removing the radiator and the gear in the steering unit? Has anyone tried to put a clamp bolt in the T along with a slot in order to tighten the T to the shaft? Thanks for any help.

That T shaft, which is the steering arm,is supposed to have a bolt through it,yes. And yes,if you take the cap off the steering unit, the shaft comes out the top. There's a plug in the center of the gear, pop that out, then loosen the bolt. It will come up against the big snap ring. Keep turning the bolt out and it acts as a puller to pop the gear off the tapered shaft.

I don't know what I was thinking. You can pull the shaft right up and out with the gear without taking the gear off the shaft.

Later tractors did not have the pinch bolt. The shaft and T had tapered splines. There should be a large nut on the bottom of the shaft, try tightening it up. If it has been run loose too long the splines may be wore out.
