RebuiId question.

I am in the process of rebuiIding one.
The conrods weigh between Iightests 1588 and heavyest 1605 grams.
Howmuch difference in rod weight is aIIowabIe?

thanks

Can't comment on what allowable, but the total weight of the rod is only half of the equation. Rods are balanced so not only is the total weight the same, but the ends are also equal. Most places that balance rods usually adjust the big end first, make all the rods match, then adjust the total weight on the small end. I try to get within a gram or two when I've done mine.

know rods shouId be cIose to the same weight both big and smaII end, thats why i weighed them.
I did not figure on finding such a big difference of 17 gram on rods coming from a what appears to be a factory assembIed engine.
17 gram is a Iot of materiaI to remove from the heaviest rod if i where to bring aII of them in Iine with the Iightest rod.
The other 4 rods are from 1593 to 1598 gram each.

Here's a decent video.

Though I prefer to use the hanging method for both
ends, not the way he does it.

Less than 2 grams is a good idea, I've seen stock
rods all out of the same engine vary 35 grams.

Crank, flywheel, front pulley, and pressure plate
balancing is money well spent also.

I bought 12 used rods in addition to the 3 good ones
I had left to find 6 that were good and fairly
matched to 3 grams and had no stress cracking or
casting flaw. I then had the engine balanced. Even
after matching the rods up they took allot more
metal off than I was comfortable with. I had the
entire engine cryogenic treated. The treatment makes
the metal stronger and more stress prof. It Cost $600.
