I just bought a 1959 Cockshutt 540 that runs great. But when cold the hydraulic system makes a sort of squalling noise until warmed up. I think I probably need to change the hyd. filter and the fluid. Where can I locate the filter and what type fluid should I use? Also type of transmission fluid and drain location. Thanks

When standing behind the tractor, the left rear of the hyd reservoir has the two outlets for the lift cylinder. On the right rear bottom corner is a small drain plug (remove the dirt and look closely).
The filter is in the canister in front of the reservoir; and I use a standard 32 weight Hyd oil.
Good luck with your new toy.

Hi,

We have the filter and o-ring for the pry off end plug..........on stock here, along with many other parts for your COCKSHUTT 540 tractor. We have the manuals too.

The operators manual fluid spec. is #10 non-detergent engine oil or auto. trans. fluid Type "A". I use Auto Trans. Dextron fluid. The system holds 9 US quarts.

The canister your referring to, is that the square stamped metal cover with a fluid line in the top of it? Is the filter under that cover? Thanks so much for the help.

The TO-19645 is the filter.

No, the filter is inside that round canister in front of the main hydraulic resevoir cover. The picture shows the round canister, but the pic does not show the other end on the drivers side. That end has a plug that you pry off with a screw driver, then you can access the filter. Look at the parts book diagram in this post to see the round filter that fits inside the round canister.

Thanks a lot to everyone that replied, from the exploded parts view I was able to crossover the filter and buy at my local parts store. Got it changed and my hydraulics sound and operate much better. Thanks once again.
