White 4-78 Forklift

I recently bought a White 4-78, now I have to get it home. Does anyone know the height on these? Would like to haul it on the gooseneck without removing the mast.

Also, does anyone have any experience with these? Troubles with the reverse-o-torque? Didn't know if it would be a good idea to road it for several miles (3-5 miles).
 
My uncle had a 2-63 years ago, remember him always driving it over to our place when sandblasting which six miles our place to his. You should be fine driving it 3-5 miles and have no problems. Can't help you on height its been to long ago
 
we've got one of those 4-78 forklifts, 1 awesome machine, but it is/was tall, don't ask how I know, but if it wasn't for Gov Scott Walker and all the heck he raised in Madison at that time I probably would still be in jail(all the Wis. cops were in Madison)
 
Depending on your mast you don't have to remove it. Take off your forks lean it against your gooseneck, remove the cylinders and back up. If you want to drive it you can. As long as the R-O-T acts ok all you have to do is watch your temp. If it gets hot downshift. Heat is torque converter slippage.
 
I believe it has a 22 foot lift. So I may have to remove the mast it sounds.

Has anyone had to source parts for the R-O-T?
 
I bought one earlier this year. Definitely road it and make sure revotorc works and all the hyd in the mast. There was water in trans, hyd resevoir, and transfer case on ours. Plus the lift cyl leaked big time. Mine has a 28ft mast, 5,000# lift according to the build sheet. Hauled it 4 hrs home on a detachable lowboy, didn't have any trouble. Its a 1969 one of the first ones made by Oliver/White.

Be careful if you lay the mast forward. The hydraulic reservoir underneath can get damaged if you go too far.

I've drove ROT's 20 miles with no problems. Once you get it warmed up good you'll find out how good of shape it's in.
 
As long as the R-O-T is in good shape - especially the heat exchanger - roading it a few miles is fine. (I've moved 'em 10 - 15 miles with no problems).

If you will be roading it in high gear, for safety best to run the machine in reverse.
 
I agree with reverse that's how we always did it, otherwise it gets out of control driving it forward trying to go strait at fast speeds.
 
Our 551 has a 3 stage mast that goes 21 or so feet high, it doesn't really fit under a 10 shop door unless you force it! We hauled it on a gooseneck and around here it's not close to hitting anything.
