two 12v batteries in the 1800c

The batteries on the 1800c are dead so I went to see what size I
needed and found out that they are 12v. Can you use two 12v, will
this cause any problems. They came with the tractor that I bought
about 2 years ago. Should I put two 6v back in it or can I just but
only one 12v in or but it back to two 12v? It ran fine the last two
years.
Thanks for your help.

My book shows diesel has two 6 volt batteries for series C and it says A and B are similar. Non diesel shows one 12 volt battery for series C and series A and B will be similar. I priced a heavy duty 6 volt battery for my 77 and they wanted $148, I didn't buy it. Greg

Did someone change it to a 12v generator or alternator? If it worked then someone must have switched it over. Is it a gas or diesel? Need some more info.

Being a diesel originally 12v obtained with 2 6 volt batteries the way it's done now is putting 2 12 volt batteries in where 2 6 volt ones were. Instead of 6 volt series to get 12 volt you put 2 12 volt in parallel still 12 volts but way more cranking amperage. Resulting in faster starting rpm and if it uses the preheater it allows you to have battery reserve to start it. I've switched all 3 of our diesels over to this set up

Yes, 2 X 12v batteries in parallel is the way to go. I think you can fit 31 series batteries in there, if you can, that's what I would go with.

I just use one group 31 battery in my 1800. I think it has 850 cca. When they made the 1800s, the batteries did not put out the ca that they do today.

Mine had 1 large 12v. battery in front of the steering wheel. It had been converted to an alternator. The 1-12v. worked fine down to 0 degr. I never tried to start below that temp.

I thought the C had the battery (batteries) under the platform?
When did they switch from under the hood?

Thanks!

1964 1800C diesel had 1 under the deck and 1 in front of the steering wheel. As I said mine had 1 big 12 volt between the steering wheel and fuel tank.
