77 Standard seems down on power

I have been plowing some wheat stubble in a field that has not been plowed in 12 years. My tractor seems to be losing power. It is some sticky wet ground. My friend has a IH M and can easily pull his 2-12 plow in 3rd gear. I was able to pull my 2-12 oliver plow in 2nd in lighter ground but it barely wants to go in first in the heavier ground. I have some oil dripping out of one of my intake ports. I do plan on checking plugs and doing a compression/leakdown test on it soon. I was wondering if it could be the governor. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I doubt if it's the governor. Oil from the intake port don't sound good, and could be the culprit. Dad used to pull two fourteens with a diesel 66.

Of course, it could be the governor. It could be timing or fuel mixture problems.

More likely, from the report of oil leaking into the fuelling side of the engine, to be a coked valve (or valves) on at least that cylinder. So checking out that cylinder would be a good starting point.

I find that looking at the obvious signs, before imagining the less likely, is the better way to go at diagnosing a fault.

Dad had a two 16" Oliver plow for the 77 and a two 14" Oliver plow for the 66. Plow gear for both tractors was 2nd gear. If my brother and I would jump up a gear we would get laced down for throwing on furrow over the other. He had 3 14"'s mounted on the 55 that he was the only driver of but dropped the 3rd bottom off in hard plowing.

I sent you an e-mail. I can recall 2 tractors that had the same problem and in both cases the governor linkage was causing the problem. One was a 560 Cockshutt the other one a 4020 John Deere. Your results may be different. J.
