1600 or 550

Five Olivers

New User
Hello all witch would you prefer, its kind of for my son, 29 year old that thought dads love for olivers was nutts but that"s what I grew up with three 70"s two supper 88"s 1800-b series and a1950T 68 model. Has his own place with drive way to use a blade and what ever else he can use that I have. Plows, disk, rotory mowers, even a chisel plow.So whats your thoughts? Well I have a 1650-1655-1850- 2-77"s and a 4-210 on half acre lot in small town, go figure.

They are both good options in my mind, just depends on the jobs it'll be doing. My brother has a 550 w/ a 1510 loader on it, and that thing is hard to steer without power steering. Plenty of power though for most jobs he does with it. I have Grandpa's 1600 he bought brand new back in 64. Just today I mounted a 1610 loader on it and it really handles it nicely.

Both tractors have fluid in the tires, but the 550 is still pretty light when lifting something heavy. So far with the manure I've been loading with the 1600, it's been no problem.

If you're going to use 3 pt. implements with the 1600, you gotta have the top link that is specific to the 15, 16, and White 2-70. Some guys sell them in 2 peices on ebay for crazy stupid money. The 1600 is cat 2 3 pt, which can be bushed down to work on cat 1, where as the 550 is strictly cat. 1.

For my own uses, I like the 1600. It's bigger and more powerful, but still plenty nimble for it's size.

Either way, a loader is a must for general around the yard purposes.

I like the 1600 operator platform. I have two Olivers and a White on three acres so I have room for a lot more. I can't wait to tell the wife! LOL Greg

Thanks for the reply, yes I prefur the 1600 myself but he'd take what ever I come up with. One of my 77 is a ind with a lull loader so I know about being not able to steer it. my 1655 has awestendorf wl23 loader on it and he has it now, (2 months). wanting to plow with it at a friends traded for a case 3300 series 4-16 semi mounted plow want to put 1655 on it (dynode at 76 hp)and would like to try 1650 too.
