I am looking at buying a 1955 Super 77 Diesel that has been sitting for a number of years. Could you please tell me what I should be checking before attempting to start it. If it helps the serial number is 28-289,705

Thanks

DON'T try to start it before you make sure the control unit in the injection pump is free otherwise kiss at least $800.00 good by! It has a slow speed rear end.

I have read that you recommend a screw driver test could you send me some information on completing that?

That sounds like a good mechanics article for one of the Oliver magazines if you can save someone from making an $800 error. Have you done that before?

The control unit can be quickly checked for free movement with the throttle at idle position, then see if the lower shaft will move easily back and forth. If it will not move at all the control unit is stuck. The head plunger should be checked too through the side cover opening. If it is stuck just turning the engine by hand will snap the plunger foot. Then good luck finding another one. Last Massey PSB I repaired took three pumps before a good used head was found.

When you say check the head plunger are you referring to removing the 2 screws retaining the control unit? Then what using a screwdriver to operate the plunger? I did purchase a dealer service manual just want to get all my ducks in a row before starting the inspection. Thanks

J. Schwiebert if you could give me a call so we can talk about checking the control that would be great. My cell is 619-952-3037 thanks
