Gear shift on 1850

O. K. fellas I guess I am about to display ignorance again but if I knew I wouldn't have to ask! I can only find 3 speeds[gears] on my 1850. Six if you use the hydra shift. Top speed I have is a little slower than third gear on my 560 farmall. I wish I had realized this before Randy came down in august. He could have shown me what I was doing wrong. He even drove it! I figure I will feel foolish when you tell me what Im missing but at least then I will know. Thanks for your help. Lee

I thought I used more than just three when I drove it? Maybe not. Can you find the center neutral?

Randy you probably did its just something I am missing. I can find neutral. When you say pull it down does that mean back toward you or push down on the shifter like the old vw beetles did to put it in reverse. Before I bought this one I had never sat on an Oliver so it is sort of new to me. Thanks for your help. Lee

It's just an I pattern with an H on each end. Let the shift center itself, then push it forward toward the dash or pull it back toward the seat.

It also helps to have it in under when you are shifting. Do you still have shift pattern decal on lower dash? Use that as a guide. As you sit in the seat swing shift lever side to side neutral is in the middle and I think you need to push toward the dash. It's like three neutrals upper side to side ,middle up and down and lower side to side. Hope this helps, Greg

rrlund, If he doesn't have shift pattern decal on the dash maybe someone can post a picture of 1850 shift pattern. I looked on Yesterday's tractor parts and the closest thing I could find was super 88 gear shift plate not sure if pattern is same as 1850. Greg

Success!!! I tried when doing some of my chores this morning and got it to go in the top 3 gears. It has the shift pattern on it but wanted to ask before I tried to force anything. (I didn't have to force anything once I read the correct method. Thanks so much for all of you fellas help. I would hate to be without this website. I love driving this old tractor! Cant wait to use it. I do have one more problem though. The 3 point does not lift. I talked to the guy at Maibach when ordering odds and ends parts and he said it would be a roll pin or pressure valve under the transmission cover. Randy I know you pulled yours recently, any guidance on this ? Thanks again , Lee.

Hear is the shift pattern on my 1550 utility as an example. Your 1850 will be backwards to this one, On yours R1 2nd 5th and 1st will be on the bottom and R2 3rd 4th and 6th will be on top of the shift pattern. Sometimes finding that natural slot up and down can be hard to find, On mine sometimes you have to let the clutch out a little to get it to go up and down on the shift pattern.

If your gear shift is up by the dash your in the upper range, And if its closer to the seat your in the lower ranges. I hope this helps you out. Bandit

Does the 3 point go up empty? You need a shop book. I don't think it is a roll pin. It may be a cracked or broken elbow on the internal cylinder safety valve. You have e-mail or a phone number? J.

Probably not your problem, but one thing you could check is the adjustment bolt on the right side, bottum of the hydraulic housing,(half inch bolt, 3/4 inch head with a lock nut). When I bought my 1655 fifteen years ago, the three point arms wouldn't move at all. I was talking about it with my brother one day, and he said that bolt is supposed to be backed out a few turns to run a one way cylinder, but if it's out far enough the three point arms won't work. Screwed it back in and it's been working ever since. Probably not your problem but a simple thing to check before you start tearing things apart.

That bolt down by your right heal, when I looked at it,it was awful rusty. Did you get it all the way out? I'd be taking it out and if you can't clean those threads up so a nut will screw right on and off,I'd put a new one in it.
