Gear shift lever

Got my clutch in my Cockshutt 1550, & got the power steering hooked up, works fine, BUT, When I try to shift gears, it is really hard to take out of a gear * change gears or put it into neutral.. The gear shift goes all the way up to the dashboard. A couple of times it felt as it went into 2 gears at once as it wanted to kill the motor. When I bought the tractor I knew the clutch was gone on it, When we took it apart the release bearing was seized solid, & wore the fingers on the pressure plate way down. The guy I bought the tractor from was probably ramming the gear shift lever to get it into & out of a gear. As I was trying to get it out of a gear now..
Is it possible that the gear shift lever is bent, or??? under the plate ??
The gear shift is real loose & swings quite a bit even in gear.

sounds like you have the shifting leaver out of range. take out the shifting leaver and allign the shift rails with the neutral slot and put the shift leaver back into the alligned notches in the shift rails. all three rail notches should be aligned with the notches

How do I watch for the springs?? will they fall out when I lift the shifter?
Do I take the shifter out with the 4 bolts & plate, or just the shifter with the 2 bolts??

What would have caused it to go out of range. This must have happened before I bought it. I want to avoid it happening again..

Thanks for your help.. Yes it was out of range.. The previous owner must have thought it was a transmission problem there were only 3 bolts in the shifter cover & 2 were missing.. It was actually a clutch problem..It now shifts perfect.. Once again thanks much..
