S-55 vs 550 Tranny Speeds

I always thought that the 550 tranny was supposed to have more even MPH spacing than a S-55. But when I look at the Oliver Data book by Brian Rukes, the speeds are almost the same. I ask because we use a S-55 to mow our yard, and the jump from 3rd to 4th is too much, and I thought a 550 would be better. Any comments?

Thanks

Well what is the gear code on your Super 55? Is it 518 or 519? What size tires are on the tractor? Do you have a 550 that you arelooking at? Would need the same information.

Our S-55 is a tranny code 518, currently using 13.6 x 28 tires and the jump from 3rd to 4th is significant.

I have not picked out a 550 yet.

Thanks

A 550 (or Late Super 55) is slower in fourth gear. A Super 55 with the 518 gears is listed @ 6.1 MPH at 2000 RPM. A 519 at 2000 RPM is listed at 5.2 MPH. In both the 518 & 519 combinations third gear is listed at 3.9 MPH.
