Wow! gear reduction starter

The starter on the 1855 was dragging and had worn out brushes, been babying it all season. I pulled it off on Monday, brought it to the local rebuilder who had a replacement on the shelf. Asked about a gear reduction one instead and for the same price I walked out with a new one over a rebuilt old style. Installation was no big deal, just needed to lengthen a few wires and use longer bolts.

Man does that wake up the old Ollie! I have to make a new longer cable to the preheat yet, but I don't think I'll need it unless it's REALLY cold. Now I can leave it in the field over night and not worry about it not starting.

Out of curiosity where was the gear reduction starter made? I hear a lot of people like them.
I bought a 1950 with a 5.9 Cummins that had gear reduction. My neighbor borrowed it for the spring and he burned up the starter. Did not tell me and went and bought another starter. When he told me, I told him I always have four or six starters on the shelf. I am interested to see what kind luck we have with this new gear reduction starter.
Does anybody have a particular brand gear reduction starter that they have had good luck with?

Yea, it really is amazing what a working starter can do. A few years ago, my neighbor always hesitated to use his IH gas truck because the engine barely turned over. It would barely crank over for 10-20 seconds and then give up the ghost. I took his starter off and put in new windings for him. That engine would almost pull out of the motor mounts after that (well, kidding there) and would fire immediately after that fix. Sometimes the deterioration is so gradual that you really don't know what the problems is. That truck got many years of hard use after that.

I know it did always seem to turn over pretty slow, even before the starter was on it's way out. Just the way it's always been.

Now it seems to start within 1/2 a revolution. Really impressed with it so far.
