'62 Oliver 770 Diesel Restoration

I am in the process (very beginning stage at best) of restoring my grandfather's 1962 Oliver 770 Diesel. The tractor was parked around 15 years ago by him when he found metal in the oil. At that time the battery (or batteries?) were removed. My dad seems to remember that it had two batteries hooked together. Does anyone know what type of system, this might be (6V or 12V) and what is your best guess at the most common cause for metal to show up in the oil? Thanks in advance. This is gonna be a long project with lots of questions.

Here are a few pics of my project

The batteries would have been 6v hooked together positive to negative, then the positive on one battery would have been grounded to the frame, and the negative on the other would have gone to the solenoid. Yes,positive ground. There was a short battery cable with a battery clamp end on each end to hook the two together.

(quoted from post at 18:30:47 10/17/14) Roosa Master injection pumps starting showing up on the 770 tractors when I started in the summer of 1960.

Are they a good thing or a bad thing? I am way new to the whole restoration thing as you can tell. Are they easily worked on?

I would take a sample of the engine oil and have it sent to a lab so they can determine what the metal is. 99% sure the engine will need to come out of the frame. Do you have e-mail? I would also order a parts book and an operators manual + at least an I & T shop manual.
