Oliver/White 1678 loader

I just bought a Oliver/ White 1678 loader/backhoe tractor but I'm not sure if it is a 1550 or a 1650 tractor. Where or how can I tell the difference, I can't find it maked. I want to buy parts and owner manuals but need to be sure what I have first.

Does it look like this? Its a 1650 diesel that has throttling pintle type fuel injection nozzles and energy cells. After serial # 187 586 000 the 1650 had Roosa-Master "pencil" type injector nozzles. Greg

1678 is the LOADER UNIT, backhoe is either 1615 (15ft dig swings with a hydraulic motor), or 1617 (17 ft dig and swings boom with cylinders). TRACTOR is 2-62 if based on the 1550 chassis, or 2-78/4-78 if based on 1650 chassis.

Did you look for a tractor serial number on the lower tractor dash? What casting numbers do you have for the engine by the starter?

I'll look for them this evening.

Thanks

Yes I knew the 1678 was the loader and the backhoe is a 1617. I knew the tractor was either a 1550 or 1650 but I just couldn't find it marked and this loader was used on both. It's a good running machine with good power and strong hyd but needs brakes which I think are the same. I want to get parts and owner/service manuals and at around a $100 I want to be sure what I have.

Yes it looks a lot like the picture but mine is much nicer looking haha. Thanks for the input if I can find the SN# this will help.

On the serial number plate for the tractor, on the line for model identification there is a number set up like this. 000-00000.
In the first three digits "455" says it is a 1550. If it is a 1650 the numbers are" 465", "265", or "165". My hoe is the 465.
Serial number are also listed on the left of this website.

If you look at the engine only the 1550 mounting foot is smaller that the one for a 1650. 77, super 77, 770 1550 and 1555 all have the short mounting foot. 88 through 1655 are the longer foot.
Clear as mud?

Great, thanks, that did clear it up for me. Smaller - 1550 it is.
