1850 Clutch Problems

My 2nd 1850 is behaving odd. This is the one that the clutch was sticking on earlier this summer. When you press down on the clutch pedal, it goes to about 3" from from the end of travel and then pushed really hard the rest of the way. It doesn't slip or make any noises. I took the inspection plate off and with no one around to press on the pedal, I really couldn't see anything. Anyone ever have this happen??? Chris

Do you have the greasable throwout bearing or sealed? If greasable, try greasing it. Otherwise, your throwout bearing may be hanging up on the center tube it rides on. Does the pedal "break free" after you've applied more force with your foot, or is there constant resistance for that final 3" of travel?

You can also look at the clutch pedal pivot and linkage and determine whether or not they are binding. There should be a grease zerk on the pedal pivot.

Otherwise, you're looking at pulling the engine and aux trans to get at the clutch and throwout. If the binding is occurring on that center tube or in the pressure plate, it won't likely get better on its own. Have someone over to operate the clutch while you're looking into the inspection hole. Then you can determine where it is binding before/during clutch disengagement.
