1850 sprrdometer

Can these speedometers be taken apart? Mine won't
spin so I would take it apart to check out the
innards if that is possible. Has anyone had one of
these apart and if so how did you do it?

I've opened an 880 tach and some 1800 gauges.

The face is I guess crimped on. You can get it off if you are careful with a roughly 1/8 screwdriver. You have to pry the edge up from the back side. Start it and keep going around. You might need pliers to help lift the edge to get it off.

This method is crude as you can tell. If you are careful taking it off it can be reinstalled (with pliers) but it will be scuffed.

No warranty on this but I have done it. I cleaned oil out of the 880 tach. It works but is nothing great. I changed 1800 gauges from positive ground to negative because I put a electronic regulator on the generator.

Years ago I used the method you describe. Results were about the same. Wonder how the guys that restore tachs get them off and reinstalled?

I don't really know what to think about opening them.

I wonder some kind of roller might put them back on neater. I was just thinking that if I used smooth jaw pliers to put them back it might not scuff them as much.
