I think that might have been a main bearing

I use the 1550 gas on the 3pt V rake all summer. I raked some today and was coming home, the darned thing started bogging down like the hydraulics were sticking or something. I dropped the rake a little and raised it back up,wiggled the remote levers and it kept it up. Then it started blowing smoke out the blow by tube. I idled it down some, the lugging let up and the smoke cleared. I got it home and shut it off. Left it about 20 minutes and started it back up. No smoke and sounds good, but I took the rake off. I'll finish with the 1850 the rest of the season I guess. I think that engine had better go upside down on the stand before I press my luck and run it anymore.

The two main bearing failures I had one was noisy that was our 2-70 White. I was pulling manure spreader uphill and it started squeaking. The early 1650 failure was an abrupt halt #7 main bearing rolled up. Both engines were 283 diesels one direct and one indirect injection. The 2-70 was tired when we bought it and should of rebuilt it right away. Greg

That is how it goes, get one done and get to start on another. My bearings went out in the gas 1850 when baling, governor went out so thought I could finish baling with a hot rod. But what happened is the bushing seized and it chewed up the gear and dumped filings into oil, didn't go far and started loosing oil pressure. I just put in new bearings over night and was good to go the next day, still running strong. Tom

This darned thing has 9500 hours on it. I don't even remember how long I've had it,but at least 20 years. It still doesn't burn a drop of oil,but it has an IH oil gauge on it and never has had pressure worth a darned. I always thought maybe that gauge just wasn't calibrated to that tractor. The only thing I ever did to the engine was to put a head gasket in it years ago when the radiator sprung a leak and one of the boys drove it home dry. I don't know how it survived that, but the head gasket was the only thing that went.

How often should the rods and mains be changed, my 1555 diesel spun a main and ruined the block and has only 3600 hrs. and it was serviced regularly.

I don't know. I got thinking today,I've had that for 22 years and I've never had the pan off of it.

I started taking it apart tonight. I got the head off. It had been missing the last few times I used it. I had taken the plugs out the other day and they were dry,so I thought I had a stuck valve or something. Turns out there was a broken rocker arm.
I got the gas tank off and chain coupler apart. I don't know if I can get it pulled all the way out in the morning before the dew goes off so I can rake hay or not. I'm not going to drop the pan with it in there. I'll turn it over on the stand first.

Yep,she's upside down on the stand. It's a 4 main. The second one was spun, the third is the thrust and that one was turned some too. The only bad spot on the crank was in that number 2 and was only ridged a little between two of the three oil grooves. I took a file and some emery cloth to it. Got it pretty smooth and shiny. My son does this stuff for a living,so I'll have him take a look and see what he thinks. It's not like it's a race car engine turning 9000 rpms I guess.
