If changing engine oil in an old tractor such as a 1945 Oliver 60 that you know nothing about should you use detergent oil or non detergent oil,or does it make a difference. Also what oil filter should I look for I know it takes a stubby one so the side curtains will latch

any motor oil will do. Oliver would have used a straight weight oil in them. regular motor oil with det is easier to find. 15W40 would also work.

Might be a good idea to check under the rocker cover. Lots of gunge and a change to a strongly detergent oil could dislodge crud from around the engine. Not so much a problem with kfull flow filters, which may need changing regularly initially; just the ones with bypass filters where unfiltered oil is fed to bearings.

Only experienced once, when the oil feed line to the governor got blocked on the Ollie 90. Avoided a problem as I was checking around on a regular basis at that time. Governor had grenaded early in its life, possibly due to the same sort of issue.

filter # Baldwin PT302, just cross-ref to your brand. I would always run detergent oil. But if the engine has always had non-detergent then theres going to be sludge all over in engine and the detergent oil will break down the sludge and can cause troubles. What I would do is when you drain oil put your finger or a bent screw driver through the drain plug hole and feel/scrape the bottom of the pan. If it feels like theres alot of sludge I'd pull the pan and valve cover and clean all the sludge out. When I did my 99 there was 1/2 to 3/4 in of sludge in bottom of pan.
