1855 cummins repower

I know a lot of these conversions have been done, but there doesn"t seem to be a ton of info or detailed parts lists out there on how to get a project like this going.

I have an 1855 with a non-cooler block 310 that has started mixing oil and coolant. I wouldn"t have a problem with having the 310 rebuilt, but worry that it won"t perform in the 110-120 horse range reliably like I"d like the tractor to in the future. Would mostly be using the tractor to pull a 13" NH7450 discbine, and we do have some hilly ground.

I"m pretty clear on needing an sae3 bellhousing, 100 series white clutch/flywheel and different pto hub, but I know there are a lot of other details.

Any industrial 5.9 cummins should have the proper manifolds and pump?

Can the 1855 tub be easily modified to accept a 5.9, or is an 1850 diesel tub a better option? If the 1850 tub is used, do the 1855 steering box and front end interchange?

Any input I can get from you guys would be appreciated

Do you currently have that disc mower and pull it with your 1855? I had an 11' Deere 930 and on a 1755, it wasn't anywhere near enough tractor. I got a 2-135 and that was finally enough power where I could use the capacity the mower had and had enough weight where it didn't push the tractor when cornering on hills. Upgrading to a 2-135 was one of the best things I've done.

Honestly, if you've invested in that kind of mower, you need enough tractor in front of it where you can utilize the capacity the mower has otherwise what's the point? If you really want to go like stink and use the capacity, you'll need more than 110hp. That said, unless you have really light crops, I'd be looking at putting a 2-155 in front of it. You'll want the cab to protect your from stones, heavier hitch for all that tongue weight, likely bigger tires for reduced compaction, and you'll have enough weight and power for the hills. For what you'll spend on a conversion, not counting your time, you can get a nice 2-155 and have a whole lot more tractor that's really a notch above your 1855. IMHO, you'll just be happier in the end.

You will likely have more $$ in it than it is worth.
You may be further ahead to part the 1855 out and go find a tractor in your needed horsepower range. As a side note, I would NEVER want to rely on a tractor powered by a 310 to reliably operate in the 110-120 horsepower range, they were never designed for that kind of power. Just my humble opinion.

1855 can comfortably run a 9 or 10 ft disc moco, but not 11+. Upgrade the whole tractor, and restore 1855 with a 310 rebuild.

Up until last year, I had been pulling an 11' gehl discbine with it and gotten along all right cutting at 5-5.5 mph. That mower popped and I had to upgrade. This new mower is plenty even for my 2-105 to handle; haven't cut at more than 6 mph with that pairing.

I will probably just do a budget rebuild on the 310, and keep the tractor around for raking/tedding and as a backup. Will be on the lookout for a nice 2-135, 120, or 140 over the winter. Thanks for the advice guys.
