New to me 1850

Well here's my new to me 1850. Rebuilt engine, new radiator, new clutch, new hyd pump, bad tires. The Model # is 485-22013 and the serial # is 216 580-557 which doesn't make sense to me. The numbers I found for the 1850s don't include my serial number. Am I seeing it wrong? My tach doesn't work so after inspecting I found (on the 3rd picture)-sorry for the multiple pics- where the tach cable screws into the 90 degree "thing" under the radiator hose, the inside doesn't turn so the cable won't turn. If I am reading my IT manual correctly this is called the auxiliary drive shaft. Can I pull the 4 bolts off of the front cover of this thing and see why this isn't turning or will I mess up something inside? My IT manual is not very clear at all on this. Thanks.

Your serial number is 216 580. 557 is the gear train code. I would call it a late 1850.FYI engine serial number is stamped near the injection pump. Yes if you take the 4 bolts out you will be fine. All the bolts on the Perkins are SAE fine thread.

There's a fair chance that when you pull that tach drive out, you'll find that the drive pin is broken. There's a pin that has kind of an offset on it,like a key that goes in a keyway. That slides inside the big shaft that you see sticking out the rear and in to the shaft in that 90 degree drive.

First off thank you both for the quick replies. Why is the rear end of the shaft keyed? What would be run off of that end of the shaft?

I don't think it had any use on the tractors. Those engines were used in several different applications.

I have seen compressors attached to the keyed auxillary drive shaft. Worked on an articulated loader that had that setup. Compressor locked up while running and ruined two gears inside the front cover.

Perkins used that engine in truck applications. They were planning and maybe did sell a fair number of those engines to Ford of the UK. In some applications M-F use that for the tach drive. fact the first White application was in the PDQ trucks.

It's not too bad. I think the select o speed was made for that type of work. The 1850 will be replacing it though. It will be for sale if anyone is interested.
