1855 Steering trouble

I was brush hogging the other day, and I snagged a stump with the front wheel. I heard a pop and then my steering was not very responsive. I could turn the wheel a few revolutions before it would respond. If I hit a bump, it would go off on its own as well, but I could still steer. Now, yesterday I hit another stump and now I can not steer to the left barely at all, and there is very little response in the steering. Did I mess something up in my pump? I just rebuilt the cylinder up front, and it seems to me that it would not be my problem. Any help as to where I need to start would be great, I need the 18 to rake hay. Thank you!

I've had the center steering arm break and broke a shaft that comes down out of the cylinder to the arm. From the description you give,I'd think it might be the arm. They're partially splined and have a bolt through then too to squeeze them together where they split. Sounds like the second hit finished it off.

Well first of all you (we?) need to determine if it is a hydraulic problem with the steering unit or a mechanical problem. Next we need to determine if the steering unit is the orignal saginaw type unit or a later orbit motor type unit. Do you have a 2 or 3000 PSI pressure gauge?Have you looked at what R Lund suggested?

Thank you gentlemen, I will look into that shaft and steering arm first, then steering pump second. It is a replacement pump supposedly out of a combine. Dad put it in years ago after having problems with the old one.

What steering pump? The power steering operates off of the main hydraulic pump. Are you refering to the hydraulic cooler pump?

J, I guess I'm transferring lingo here across different brands. I was referring to the steering motor. I got a helper today, laid under the front and had them turn the steering wheel. My steering shaft and steering arm are stripped. Thank you very much J, and rrlund for the help and advice!
