taking engine out of my 1855 , need to get the main PTO shaft( long live shaft that runs throw hydral shift) out, removed plug , ect.. from rear 1000 RPM hole, can pull shaft out about 8 inchs ,then it wont come no more , i can feel splines line up when i turn the shaft but still wont come no further sounds solid when it hits , can someone shed some light on this? , do i have to remove PTO unit from rear ? have an original service manual and it isnt to detailed on this procidure , thanks in advance

You need to line up 2 sets of splines. The splines on the long shaft are not lined up with the splines in the PTO clutch. Some people use an impac on the long bolt.

Push the shaft in a 1/2", turn it a smidgen and pull again, you may have to this a number of times till both sleeves as Schwiebert mentioned are lined up and the shaft will slide out.
You face the same thing when re-inserting the shaft.
I would not bang the shaft back to hard if it wont go to avoid marring or mushrooming the spline ends.
