1850 Oliver

I looked at a couple of Oliver 1850 tractors today. One was a diesel with a model number of 385-22005. The other was a gas with a model number of 285-21115. The gas tractor had a gear shift like I had never seen. It was bent out to the right side of the tractor. All of the one I have ever seen were between your legs. It looked factory. I am wandering if the model number denotes a different transmission or something? Also any help with the diesel model number would be great. I am wanting to know what series of Perkins it would have had it in from the factory. Thanks

can't help with the motor numbers but the shift lever was replaced from a later model White. Makes it easier to climp into seat.

My recollection is the 1850 used a Perkins 6-354 engine; pretty much the same as was in the MF-1100 and MF-1130. Maybe not the very best engine in the world, but I would say, at least, amongst the very best. HTH best, Yeoman

My dad always bent the shifters over to be like the whites, heat it up and bend it over then you didn't always hit your legs on it, where are you located, he has bent over a lot of them as he used to repaint them for a dealer and he bent over most all of them.

The gear shift could have been factory. I have one just like you described. It was an option listed in the parts books. The engine model/serial is just below the injection pump. I believe most used a DOT 1.

Back in those days there were no Dot 1 thru 4 Perkins. The Perkins in the 1850 tractors was pretty much a no dot engine. The gear shift was an option. Sometimes you had to stretch one of the centering springs so the gear shift would stay centered. Post the complete 9 digit serial numbers and we will see what gear combinations were used.

The gear shift on my 1975 2-105 w/cab was a knee knocker when it was NEW, dealers mechanic reshaped it and added 4-6 inches on top, just have to respect it when shifting lots of leverage there now, been that way since 1976.
