Thoughts on a 1850

My wife's uncle wants to sell me his 1850. According to him it had an engine rebuild, new hyd pump, new clutch, and a thorough going over about 2000 hours ago. It is far from a trailer queen but it looks OK for a farm tractor. All 4 tires are about 30%. It also comes with a loader. He is asking $4000 but he says he will give me a deal. I currently own a super 55 and love it. I haven't had to do much of anything to it so I really don't know how available parts are for these older Olivers. I live in central WI and there aren't too many Oliver owners here to talk to so I am wondering what your thoughts are. Is this a fair price? How do these tractors hold up? I have a 12' disc and a 5 shank chisel plow so I think it would have more than enough HP to serve me well. What would anyone like to tell me about an 1850? Thanks.

Gas or Diesel? Gas is super thirsty but powerful. Diesel Perkins is unbeatable in my opinion. if you can get it for $4000 or under with a loader on it I would buy it in a hurry. I am in central wisco as well.

Like Schim said,if it's a diesel, grab it. They are to Oliver what the 4020 was to Deere. I had a 4040 Deere along with an 1850 diesel. The Deere has been gone, traded off,for a dozen years or more. The 1850 is still here working every day. Parts are no issue at all. I blew a seal in the hydraulic pump on mine a month ago. One phone call and a new pump was here the next morning. That's how it is with pretty much anything you'll ever need,if you ever need anything at all.

We picked up a 1850 Gas with 345 Dual Loader for $ 3000 sitting along Hwy 10, central WI last year in average condition. Nice Tractor will pull what you have listed with no problems. Lein Implement in Hixton WI is a good source of parts and questions. (715-963-4211) he has many old parts tractors. The tractor itself is nice to work on; external dry brakes, PTO comes out the back, clutch out the side, many easy to change filters.6 cylinder Perkins is a solid motor. Looks like it has the Cab like ours with the sliding doors? (nice) Steering wheel adjust up/down in/out better than the deere's of that age. fun tractor to drive. I would get a shop/operator manual for it. Check craigslist Eau Claire someone near Bloomer has been parting out a 1850/1800 the tires like new. Lots of people on this site know these rigs inside and out... I'm not much of a wrench but anything you need I will try and help. Good Luck.. Yes I would buy it! Then tell the wife it's your Christmas Present to yourself...

Don't fool around thinking about it for long or someone else will buy it. Perkins is a good motor and the price is right. I paid $5,500 for an 1850 with a loader with about 6,000 hours on the tach last year and figured I got a good price. The power steering is pretty good, the hydraulics are good for the tractors of the day. 18.4x34 loaded tires and a set of weights gives you a tractor approching 12,000 lbs. 92 hp. or there abouts. The mechanical brakes aren't up to the hydraulic style, but work okay if you keep them clean and adjusted properly. The PTO brake can be a pain to get shimmed properly. Good solid tractor that was competitive with anything in that size range in it's day. If you don't buy it you will regert it.

What, not too many Oliver owners to talk to locally? We farm in the Rosholt area and have over 14 Olivers and the related versions of Whites and Moline. Lots of Olivers and Whites in the area. I think you would really enjoy the 1850 and it is very fairly priced. We get most of our parts from Maibach instead of going through local dealers.
