Super 55 pto problems

Hi, I had my tractor at the shop to split and fix a leaking seal. While apart, I had them install new clutch disks for the pto. I bought the disk set from Korves some time ago. Got the tractor back and tried running a mower, but the pto did not stay engaged. It would run for a few minutes, then if hit a little taller grass, the pto would slip and disengage. Pulling back on the pto lever would help a bit, but would slip. The pto lever would not have that "snap" when engaging, it is very light to the touch... not the 32lbs pulling wt according to spec for the lever. It would re-engage if I lifted the mower. So this morning I attempted to adjust the pto. Removed the plate under the tractor and rotated the adjustment ring. It only slightly made any difference. It got to the point that I rotated about 19 notches on the ring, about the max possible. It helped a little bit, but still disengaged in taller grass. If I pulled back on the lever it would re-engage better than before the adjustment, but I would have to hold the lever to keep it going. There was no "snap" to the lever when engaging. And no matter where I adjusted it, the tension on the pto lever, which is supposed to be 32lbs, did not change..... it was fairly loose. Maybe only 5-10lbs would be my guess as I don't have a pulling gauge.
I took it back to the shop, but they're not sure what the problem is. Talking about installing another friction disk or two. Any ideas? Thanks!

First of all I can not believe the shop did not check the adjustment before they slid the 2 halves together! It is all there in the open!. Are you (or the shop) sure the set screws were properly engaged in the slot in the long PTO shaft? How about a serial number/ Phone number? How many disks did you install both fiber and steel?

So I took the tractor back to the shop yesterday. He said they also noticed that when turning the adjustment it did not make a difference on the amount of pressure needed to pull the pto lever or any snapping into engagement. He wasn't sure why. THe guy at the shop said he stands by his work so will take it apart to try and fix it.
I don't know about the set screws you mention that engage the slot in the pto shaft. I'll mention that to the guy at the shop to check.
I don't recall now how many disks were installed. It was a set of discs I got from Korves and they were all bagged together. I counted them at one point but don't remember. I'll also have to ask whether there were any steel discs. I know there were fiber... seems to me there was a metal one but have to check.

The tractor info is specification # 15-0005 and serial # 7839-518.

I had my S-55 apart a couple of times working on the PTO clutch, the best thing that I did was change to the 550 type handle that goes direct onto the clutch shaft in front of the brake peddles. I could not get sufficient snap over with the normal lever and rod that runs under the floor board. I have seen people use the standard S-55 lever and make it work on the forward position.

Good Luck
Rich

How many fiber discs SHOULD they have installed... four? I don't have my IT manual here with me at the moment.
Thanks for the help!

I have been thinking of fixing my pto on the the super 55 I have.Is this a job for the shop or can I do it myself? It runs like it"s engaged all the the time. I haven"t had it to long so I haven"t used the pto on anything yet. It runs like it"s engaged all the time no mater where I put the lever.

Hi Ed,
I'm not sure whether you need a shop or not. Depends on the problem I guess. Disengagment problems seem to be a common topic on this forum so best to search the archives. Also, you may have checked already, but maybe your pto is just spinning due to light friction from warped plates and not really under power. You could push a piece of 2x4 or something (not your hand/foot!) against it to see if it stops when lever is disengaged.

I'll have a check and see if it free wheeling or engaged. Not much to stop it with though there doesn't seem to be anything to pry against to stop the pto but I have a go at it and see. Thanks
