Super 55, 550, ......

Maybe I'm wrong but didn't WFE continue selling the 550 with differant sheet metal and model number, like a White 2-XX? I don't mean the import utility tractors. Though I don't have a lot of extra money right now I'm keeping my eyes open for a super 55, 550, or a White model (if it exists) because I've wanted one for a few years and if I'm lucky I may stumble upon something I can afford.

The last version of the 550 was built as the 2-44 (two wheel drive, Forty four flywheel engine horsepower).  The last of them were 2-44-FL forklifts built in April of 1975.

Cliff Kelly whom was an electrician in the plant said that they continued to build the 2-44 after the Fiat line was added until the management finally sent him a work order to remove all the power lines to the manufacturing equipment.

Nice little utility tractor. I would look more for condition than age. Super 55s a close cousin do not seem to be any cheaper when you compare condition of both.
One nice feature on one I have is power steering. The other thing I would look for valve for a remote cylinder. That thing is getting expensive.

I had the opportunity to run a 550 a little when I bought my brush mower since that's what it was hooked up to, I found out why people love those little tractors and added it to my wish list. I would certainly go for good condition over age any day. When looking, where exactly on the tractor would the valve be located for the remote, or is it internal?

That's some neat information, thanks for sharing. My dad had a friend from the Army that is from the Charles City area, still farms up there too. He worked at the plant for a while, not sure if it was before or after his days in the Army and Vietnam.
