Oliver 88 Clutch issue (Help)

Just installed new cluth disc, throw out bearing and complete pressure plate. Put tractor back together and cannot get enough adjustment out of the linkage to engage the clutch. very frustrating. Seems like maybe my cluth rod is bent possibly causing it not to be long enough. It seems like I need about another inch of adjustment. Any ideas anyone? Thanks, Greg

Lots of questions: Did you check the height of the release levers when the clutch pressure plate was bolted up? Do you still have the old style clutch petal? Did you replace the pilot bearing? When you say the clutch does not engage do mean when you push down on the petal the clutch will not release so you can put the tractor in gear or do you mean you can grab hold of the shaft with the engine off and trurn the clutch shaft?

Thanks for reply. I have the new style clutch assembly. I have the single pedal rod with the short threaded adjustment at the end that rides against the arm inside with the throwout bearing. My problem is I cannot adjust any further as running out of threads but still cannot put in gear with tractor running. Just grinds. Its like I need another inch of adjustment to get the proper linkage length to release clutch properly to put in gear. If you start the tractor in gear it pulls fine. This is the same issue I had before replacing clutch and is the reason I tore it apart. The old clutch disk was still good. The throwout bearing had locked up and ate the pressure plate fingers up. I"m thinking my linkage has bent somehow possibly?

Greg, it is possible you have gone to far with your adjustment, pushing the throwout bearing in to far. you should have 3/4" free play at the top and the clutch should fully released when the petal is depressed to point where its stop is 1" from the bull gear cover. hold the clutch petal at that point with the tractor in neutral, engine off and see if you can turn the shaft. hope this helps, chuck

Chuck, Thanks for the reply. I thought about that and will confirm again but there was no pressure on the pedal at all until I adjusted it to almost the end of threads. With a new clutch disc, throw out bearing and pressure plate I would think the adjustment would be very little.

Thanks. I saw that as well but noticed the rod will not fit into the top hole as it is a little smaller in diameter. It's almost like the rod has been bent a little or something. It doesn't look like it with the nakid eye but possible could be. Seems odd that I have the same issue I had before replacing everything. That is the only thing that hasn't changed. Thanks,

Greg, looks like you are going to have to pull the bell housing and check the finger adjustment on the pressure plate. good luck, chuck

I'm wondering now if I should have adjusted the fingers on the pressure plate. Will the input shaft and bell housing come off without pulling the engine again?

One further area - can the crankshaft end float be wrong? Has anyone re-faced the flywheel?

If your pilot bearing or bushing is bad the input shaft would keep turning with clutch pedal pushed in, correct?

I had to replace the bushing in my RC 88 (went with the newer bearing setup), couldn't shift into gear after being in neutral with engine running. Input shaft wouldn't slow down enough to allow the transmission to shift without grinding gears.

Probably not the issue, but just throwing it out there.

Also, even with pulley setup you don't need to pull the engine. You just have to remove the side metal, hood, gas tank, instrument panel and lay forward on engine.

You may have pushed the input shaft too far so it is riding on the pilot bearing face if you did the clutch won't disengage losing the couple bolts and slide it back .
