2255 3150 Engine

I'm sorta looking at a 2255 with a 3150, around 4,000 hours. I've not laid eyes on it yet, other than some pictures. It sounds like the only problem is that the 3150 starts missing and cutting out at around 1600 RPM's.

So, my questions are: Why would this be doing this? What is the likely remedy? How costly is this remedy? Any concerns with a 3150 with 4,000 hours on it? I'll make the assumption that the engine hasn't been opened up for anything.

Thanks for any thoughts you may have.

Our 2255 only had bearings put in the engine and it has over 6500hrs and still going. As far as the missing goes, I would say lack of fuel pressure - clogged fuel filter, sucking air. bad fuel etc. Could be a bad injector also. The engine should have bearings put in, but should last awhile yet.

It is a fuel problem. The 3150 has a fuel transfer pump on the side of the injection pump and that could be weak, but check the filters and easy things first. They are good engines and I would not worry about the bearings for that was a 3208 problem not a 3150. For the 3208 they changed the way the bearings were made, but the 3150 was the old style.

Thanks for the reply.

So, you are reasonably confident that it just isn't getting enough fuel to the injector pump and not a major issue with having an injector pump or injector problem, at least not likely? Correct?

we had a problems with 3208 injectors failing then washing down the cylinders thus ruining the piston and rings in many 4-150s back in the late 70s early 80s. I love the motor but when this happens hold on to your wallet. good luck

If it was a injector problem it would be at idle and up. With the injection pump in would be more of a surge than a miss. If it was the pump it would be a dead miss. If it is the fuel transfer pump you can put an inline after market one that is 10psi or less and that will work.

So, a little more information on this. There are more hours than earlier stated, 5900 vs. 4000. At the point where it starts cutting out (1600 RPM), there is light colored smoke.

Does this change any opinion on the problem being short on fuel and do you think that the engine still has a while left in it?

I'm assuming you bought it??? Was looking at it on Craig's list as well. Was going to stop and look at it last Thursday but it was sold and being loaded when I called. Started himhawing on it about a week before your initial post. If you did get it, please let me know what you found out about the missing. Looked like a nice tractor by the pics.

By the way, one of the things that slowed me down was when I initially talked to him, he said it was a 3208 but the serial number said otherwise. My FOS detector started going off. Good luck.

No, I didn't buy the tractor. I did make the trip down there two weeks ago Friday and it took a few minutes to realize I wasn't interested. I got the same "misinformation" from the guy about it, hours wrong, everything is real nice, great paint job, etc. But, I made the trip after having not done that in the past and wishing I had.

I did run the tractor and it was blowing gray smoke out of the hole for the dipstick at about 1800 RPM and up, so I was very concerned about the engine and the amount of blowby. It looked nice in pictures, but not nearly as nice once I laid eyes on it for real. Hope someone makes a good machine out of it. Too many unknowns or problems for me for the price and distance...
