the saginaw steering unit on my oliver 2150 has stripped the splines completely off the unit and the column. again. we repaired it 3 years ago with used parts that were difficult to find then. we have found a charlynn conversion for $1400. that seems a little excessive. has anyone done mods on a saginaw unit to make it work longer? or put a different unit altogether in one? thanks for any ideas.
picture of earl, the 2150, is on tractor talk forum.

Part numbers are the same or the Saginaw steering units for the 50 series tractors, so if you don't want to spend the money on a charlynn conversion, you should be able to find a salvage Saginaw unit readily available and just change out the whole thing. BTW, that's a nice looking 2-85 FWA in the background too!

thanks, mitch. there weren't a lot of olivers around here to find used parts from, and what is out there is already worn out. maybe in places away from NY there were more.
i wish earl looked as nice as your 2150. some genius who owned it before me thought it would be hilarious to paint the whole thing turquoise. we slapped some green on it to avoid having to look at the turquoise.
the white in the background is a 2-105. i bought it with the idea of putting a blade on the front for pushing silage and semi-retireing earl.

Apologies, didn"t mean to insult the 105 by calling it an 85. Too bad you"re not closer, I think dad has a couple Saginaw units in the shed you could try. Hate to see Earl laid up like that. Also hope the guy that painted him turquoise stubbed his toe while doing it.

Anyways, someone on here helped me out with a salvage yard on the east coast that I got some parts shipped for mine, they have a few Oliver"s and were good to deal with, in the Carolina"s somewhere. If you don"t find something closer they might be able to ship you something, let me know and I can try to dig up their contact info. Good luck.

The taper lock spline on your steering wheel is probably close to stripped. I had 4 digit Oliver that happene to me. Did the same thing you did with the same results. In my case it was high houred, beat up, 1800 I think. I measured the splined end with a caliper. Ordered a piece of tubing from a steel outfit I can not remember now. There are a lot of them on google now and there is McMaster-Carr. The tubing I found was either .002 or .004 smaller. Pounded it on with a 3 pound hammer. I think we heated it a little first.
Decided where I wanted the steering wheel cut off the tubing and on the steering end left a few inches of the steering wheel tube. Made up a pin to going into both tube ends. Helped Keep the steering wheel nice and straight. Welded up the tubes of the steering wheel. We kept the tractor about ten more years. Steering wheel never loosened up. But, the in out adjustment was gone(a lot of them froze up anyway). I would not hesitate to this again. Cheapest easiest way to go. But,I do not know about OSHA approval.
If you go the Charlyn route, I have seen a fair number of them around NY and Pennsylvania. Guys usualy want $700 or less that includes steering motor, mounting bracket, steering wheel, and hoses.
The 55 series looks the same but is open center and will not work. Exception is the open center 1655 and the White 2-70.
