Oliver 1900/1950 Engines

Am I correct in saying the 1900 has a two valve head and the 1950 a four valve? How can you tell the difference when loooking externally at the 1900 and the 1950 engine? I was offered a 1950 a while back that looks as if its had an engine transplant (replacement engine is orange in colour)and Im wondering if it may be a 1900 engine.

Well the 1900 A series tractors used the 4-53 engine with a 2 valve head and different sleeves & pistons. The B series 1900 and later used the 4 valve heads and the higher compression sleeves and pistons. On the block there is a flat spot where G-M stamped 2 numbers. One is the basic engine model, the other is a number that indicates engine options on how it was built. Post those 2 numbers and we can help you.

So,any 453 could be made to fit a 1950 but it might be set up to possibly rotate the wrong way and have more or less power than the original. Is that about right?

4-53 detroit diesel engines are very easy to identify. There is a flat faced casting protrusion on the side of the block that is about 1inch in depth. On this surface there are 8 numbers that are in 2 groups of 4 and separated by a dash. The numbers will look like this 5043-5101 as an example.

The photo I am including will explain everything.

Yes, you are right. Any 4-53 block will fit your 1950. Be aware that you may need to change direction of rotation and possible filter location if you're using a long block from a generator or etc.

As an example I am using a 4-53T in my 1900. This block is totally different internally than a natural 4-53. The exterior is 99% similar.

Before I added the 4-53T engine, my modified 2 valve head on the original engine flowed better than the previous 4 valve.

What was the difference in horsepower generally between the 453 and 453t.And yes I know there are alot of variables like 2 or 4 valve heads, different injectors, etc.

There are several 4-53T variants, with the military version at 180 hp. The average 4-53N produces 105 hp. These are advertised outputs. Individual engine builders can vary these values up or down by large amounts.
