Oliver Loader Backhoe

I ran into a truck driver a work, he commented on my Oliver hat and we got to talking. He said he has a White-Oliver 1550 diesel with loader and backhoe he want's to sell. He said it has the torque converter for forward/reverse and he used it to clean up around his place. He said when you put it in forward, you really have to rev the motor and then it starts with a jerk, after that, it works normal. Doesn't do it in reverse. He thinks that a filter change might cure it. Any thoughts?? He is asking $2500 and I really think I should go check it out if this isn't a major issue. Ya, I know, it's an Oliver, and I really would like to have a backhoe. BUT, I don't need any more major issues to deal with right now. So, what do you guys think?? Thanks, Chris

At 2500 you have lots of room left to spend on repair if needed. Worst case you have to replace the unit with a clutch and put a reverse gear in the trans. You need to go look at it anyway.

Maybe John W will post.I did one years ago. The reverse-o-torque was made by Borg Warner. It should have a plate somewhere on it with info. I cross referenced it to a Dynahoe and got the parts from a guy in the Bronx, NY. I think I have a parts book if you buy the backhoe. Parts are probably obselete but still available for a price.
Check the hydraulic swing motor with the bucket down and tires up. Make sure the bolts underneath are tight. They had a habit of shearing off after loosening up.
I wwould check it with the oil hot.
Have to remember the machine goes back to the 1960s. I have run a few backhoes with wacked out bushings and weeping cylinders and did not have a problem. One thing that could be expensive is hydraulic hoses. If they are dry and cracked, it is more expensive but less aggravating to change them all. I guess it is like life the luck of the draw.
Could be great or a money pit. Worse case scenario, you probably could get half you money back for scrap(bad word) Or it might run for years with little problem. I know it easy for sell a good running motor for $800 to $1000. Revers-o-torque are good sellers good or bad.
I probably would buy it. But, I hardly ever pay asking price no matter how low it is.
I would ask the guy if you could dig a litle. Problems do not start to show up until oil is hot.

I'm going to guess it's the linkage. Mine clunks a bit going into forward, but the linkage is a bit sloppy so it revs a little before it clicks into gear. The engine needs to ideally be at an idle when it engages from a stop. I'd go through the linkage and get it all tightened up and lubricated and I bet the problem will go away.

I have a White 2-65-15 witch is about the same as what you are talking about. It does tend to lurch and I will look into the linkage. It will push a lot of dirt and the backhoe has good power. Have had to replace a few hoses. Mine has case style controls.
