1850 pto drive shaft round 3

It has been an interesting summer! The miles on me and my equipment seem to be catching up to me. I finally had a little time to get back to trying to put the pto drive shaft back in my 1850 diesel. I have loosened both front and rear engine mounts and alternative raised it on each end to change geometry at the rear but no luck! My thinking was that if raising either end let the shaft slide in I could shim that end. I am at a loss as what to do next. I had hoped to have it finished before Rrlund came down for the 127 yard sale but it don't look like I will. I guess he will see what kind of an incompent redneck I really am lol. Anyway I need help fellas. I have both aftermarket and factory manuals for it and they say very little on this subject. I hope someone here can tell me what I am doing wrong. Thanks for any help/suggestions you may have. Lee

LOL
I'll be there August 8th. Gawd I hope you've got that thing in before I get there! I'll never live it down if I can't get it in there either.

So I was wondering if anything was changed, like the input shaft, hydraulic pump gear that it goes through? I have had one case where I bought a part from A@I that was not the right size, I have seen others post that too. Just wondering, it is a thought! Tom

I hope so too Randy . Either way I will have what serves for a red carpet around here rolled out for ya! As far as I know all he had out was the engine. He said he intended to pull the cover off to check the gears after he got the shaft back in. I could easily believe something was the wrong size inside but he says he didn't change anything. Thanks Lee

How far can you get it in?
Could it be that the needle bearing in the 3 speed input shaft came apart when the shaft was pulled out and the needles are laying in the hollow shaft preventing the PTO shaft free passage?

Don't make too big of a fuss. We're staying in Chattanooga the night before and have to make it up to Albany Ky that night. Hoping to have an hour and a half to two hours at least anyway. I don't know how late we can check in up there. Late I hope. I don't like being rushed.

Bison it could be. How can I check it? Randy I usually don't raise too much fuss till the coons get in the sweet corn, the wild hogs get in the field corn or the coyotes get a calf. lol It will just be good to see you guys again. Thanks Lee

Yes Cas it is. The fella that started it got sick and was unable. He has been through chemo and radiation but still going. He is weak but tries to be active. I hope to finish it so he can see it completed. Lee

ow far can you get that shaft in?????.
Or how much is sicking out the back end when it locks up??

When I drop that Over/Under off out of the White at the dealer tomorrow,I'll ask Bruce if he has any ideas Lee.

(quoted from post at 17:50:18 07/20/14) When it stops there is [b:b7fa35c43d]about 25 inches sticking out[/b:b7fa35c43d]. Lee
t that point it is barely in the 3 speed.
I don't know how much the 1850 differs from the 1855 but if i recall correctly the PTO shaft of a 1855 has a set of splines partway along shaft that has to engage the Hydr pump drive sleeve and that is sometimes a bear to get it to go trough the drive
There was one time i wrestled for the better part of an hr before it finally lined up and slid in. It took a lot of twisting and turning and probing.
The distance of 25" you mention sound about right,...i ain't sure though.

It has those splines. I guess I just need to keep trying. One of the guys at Maibach told me to use an impact gun on it. He said the vibration would sometimes do it. I have even tried that but no luck yet. Thanks Lee

Dang it! I dropped that thing off and walked right out the door talking to him about that yet. I never thought about that PTO until I was five miles down the road.
Hopefully he won't be too long fixing it and maybe I can remember when I pick it up.
Meanwhile,if anybody has any ideas, fire away.

I would not use an impact on it.
if you bugger up the spline tips good luck on ever getting it in.
Turn the shaft around and with the spline end turn the PTO gears a smidgen, then insert the shaft right side in and try again, you may have to do that a hand full off times but eventually you will get it in .

Randy,I have an idea tell Lee to wait until you get down to his place. Might have to stay an extra day. Milton Caterpillar here charges $135/hour. I am sure you could do it cheaper. Keep us posted.
Cas
ps Their time starts from when they leave the shop.

Randy I do those things all the time. lol I figure you are a lot sharper than I am though. Meantime I will try what Bison suggested. My problem it seems is that I am short on both time and patience. lol It may take me a while but I am going to get it. Cas made me feel better though, shop rate at the deere dealer in Crossville is $67.00 per hour. I found that out when I took my 3020 hyd pump in for them to rebuild. Thanks Lee

Just out of curiosity, and maybe I asked you before, what is the length of that shaft? I was just wanting to make sure he didn't pick something else up thinking it was the shaft for that tractor.
It should be 68 inches long, more or less,an inch and a sixteenth diameter up front as far as the middle set of splines, then inch and an eighth between the two rear splines.

I know it's a lot of work but first pull the shaft out and be sure someone never bent it trying to pull the motor without removing it. Then I hope you don't have everything together but lift the motor and try to put shaft in, if it goes has to be something to do with Hydra power line up. If it don't go something wrong with hyd pump drive or PTO

Randy I will measure it in the a.m. I think its the right one but its entirely possible he picked up the wrong thing because he sure hasn't been feeling too well. I messed with it about 30 minutes tonight and I am beginning to think it is in the pto section as Gary mentioned. I don't know how hard that part would be to pull but I have a feeling its there. Thanks Lee
