1950 4 53 detriot

Does anyone know if there is any major differences from regular 4-53 detriot and the one oliver used. I can get a 4-53 on a generator with only 15hrs on factory rebuild for less than gasket set.

The detroit from the generator may be configurated differently, so pay close attention. They can be set up to run clockwise or clounter clockwise. Blower can be on opposit sides and other key componets can be on opposit sides. The exhuast manifold on a Oliver 1950 was made for an Oliver 1950, otherwords the one that is on the generator will not work. Make sure that it is a 4 valve head.

Get the basic model number of the engine. Since it is on a generator it will not have the tractor governor. Also what hay maker said goes along with that.

It doesn't matter if it is a 2 valve head motor or a 4 valve head motor that makes no difference at all. As long as it is the same rotation motor it will work. It's not hard at all to switch the blower and whatever around to the opposite side of the engine. We have built several 4-53s for 1950s.

That engines water pump can be either a right or left hand rotation.if it's the wrong one it will not cool the engine.

I have been told you can change gearing around and switch end plates to change rotation. I know about water pump and govenor. But don,t know if cam is different or just needs to be fliped.

It sounds like the price is right. Even if it doesn't work out, there are probably plenty of spare parts in it for you.
