283 310 head

Ive ran into a problem, maybe some of you can shed some light on for me. I'm attempting to put a head that I believe to be a 283 head on a 310 Block. The block was a power unit and I believe it to be a later engine, tag says Waukesha Dresser on it. Problem is there are two small water holes in the back of the block that this head does not have, but the old head does. The real issue with that is the new head comes about a 1/16" from covering the holes. Is there a difference in the blocks and head from 283 to 310 or is this a difference in age that I'm dealing with. I cant find anything on the internet that gives any details about the block and heads being different so I ordered a VR series engine manual but don't know if it will tell me much, in the mean time I thought I would pick your brains. Any help would be great.

Come on here. What is the casting number for the block, How about the casting number for the head? Are they gas or diesel? Without me looking it up some blocks will make a 283 or a 310.Some blocks will not. There probably were from 6 to 10 different blocks. What information is on the tag of the 310 block? If you have a 283 head (diesel) the intake valves will be smaller than on a 310. Was the power unit a gas and the head a diesel or even the other way around? Are there Oliver casting numbers on either the block or the head? If the head is an Oliver it will have the part number stamped on it. Your turn.

Sorry both are gas. The dirty head is the old head that came off the block and the silver head is the new one Im putting on. The old head doesnt have the stamped number that the silver head has on it, the casting is diffrent in that spot. Thanks in advance for any help.

The 106619As head is for an 1800 A series tractor from 1960 to mid 1962. That 310 block is close to 10 years newer! You have a phone number? What are you trying to build here? You have the casting numbers for the old block? Not all 1800A series blocks and heads had coolant holes the same places either. Like was asked, what is the problem with the old block and head?

Thanks for the info! This engine is in my 77 pulling tractor. I pulled it some last year and when I dynoed it it was under powered so I had this extra head I had worked over (bigger valves polished) in the meantime. Took it apart and sleeves are great but rings were wore and 2 cracked valves. So I installed new rings and was attempting to put on the new head when I found this issue. I've checked all the other water holes and they line up. Measured the two holes in question and they are the right size to pipe plug so I think for my purpose I'm going to sub flush plug the block. I'm learning something every day with this old stuff.

Before you pipe plug them get in touch with me. Oliver had a kit to do that and it was easier than what you are talking about. That block could be worthmore than what you think. J.

Unfortunately I already did it last night and did not see this post till this morning. Fortunately the holes were already the right size so all I had to do was put in a few threads and if I ever wann go back to old head its just pulling the plugs. What's the name of the kit oliver made for this.
