1850 Diesel

Looking at an 1850 diesel nearby. Haven't put my eyes on it yet, just some pictures. 1969 model I believe.

Question I have is what do you all think one can get horsepower-wise out of the Perkins, without turning it up too much and harming it? Can you get 110-120 HP out of it without tearing the engine up? It's just a little low on horsepower for what I'd like to use it for but if I can get by with turning it up a little, then it might be just fine.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I remember the one dad bought new dynoed 105 out of the factory. Don't know if that helps. We run it for years till he traded for a cab 2-105.

The problem is the extra heat from turning the fuel up will cause more oil leaks. The rails on the head where the valve cover bolts to is close to the exhaust ports. If I was looking for one I would turn it down to about 90 Horse. It would run a long time with few oil leaks.

Oliver down-rated them to 2400rpm, presumably to match pto speeds with the transmission in line with the 310.

They were originally rated at 112hp at 2800 and later raised to 120hp. Later engines were upped to near 140hp, but with mods.

So pto is regulated at 2400rpm, but the engine could easily be set for a raised governed rpm, for more power, for non-pto work or play.
