(quoted from post at 18:50:54 07/07/14) No. It's a spur gear transmission and what you're hearing is the famous Oliver whine.
My 77 is a lot louder now than when it was new, actually louder than 15 years ago. Tractor probably has about 20,000 hours . on it. Put all new bearings in it about 10-12 years ago and still loud. I wonder if the brass bushings in the idler gears are gone and is causing the increase in noise???? Any one have ideas for a cure? Thanks, Chuck

Gordey, I actually found 140WT mineral oil which is what these tractors originally had, didn't help much. Something must be worn to cause the additional noise. Thanks, Chuck

My tractor ride 77 standard with industrial gears has 50% 140 and 50% Lucas gear fluid and it quieted it down considerably.  6th gear was the worst and it's now hardly noticeable.

I've been told that Schaeffer oil no. 267 has quieted gear whine in many cases. Does anyone have experience with it?
