Bendix won't kick in

I have 1750. The switch or something is bad so I have to use a screwdriver to jump the contacts on the starter. The starter spins but the bendix won't kick in. Is this something I can fix myself?

Rather depends on your ability.

Could be electrical or could be mechanical.

Either way it could be sorted by yourself, even if you need to buy in a new component(s) - bendix or starter motor, per egs.

It could, of course, be a worn out starter gear ring on the flywheel. Again sorted by the able and not by the rest.

So, back to the poster.....

Diesel? If yes, are you jumping the battery terminal to the little switch wire? Battery wire to the big starter wire will make the starter spin but not pull the bendix into the flywheel ring gear.

There's a big flat coil spring in the Bendix of the gas starters. They have a bad tendency to break. You can buy the whole Bendix and put it in yourself, yes.
