can engine be removed without removing hydraul shift unit with it , do you have the room in front to pull engine forward that far to clear live shaft?

First off, why would you want to? They are designed to come out together. I would think you would have a tough time supporting the hydraul-shift unit in the frame after you unbolted it. You simply pull the pto drive shaft out the rear of the tractor, uncouple the double chain, un-bolt the 4 motor mount bolts, remove the hydraulic lines and fuel tank over the top of the motor and the whole thing lifts out as a unit. Removing the radiator is a good idea, although I have pulled motors without doing it. if the tractor has a cab, I would remove the cast iron grille also. Only 4 bolts to remove. If the extended thread head bolts are in the coreect place, the motor and hdraul-shift unit will balance and removal is fairly easy.
Pay attention to any possible shims under the motor mounts.
