1550 Utility Muffler Curve Ball

Well the 1550 Utility threw me a curve ball today. I got the OL-4 88 diesel muffler and was ready to install it when I got thrown. I had to cut the old one off with a die grinder then a chisel and hammer to brake it loose, Once off I found this one is different. Instead of a pipe nipple about 6" long I found it has a short cast nipple that is 2 7/8" wide with an 1 3/4" hole in it. No worry about restricting the flow at the muffler it already there. I don't have to worry about the hood as it has been butchered up but good, Now I know why there is bondo on it. An hour of tapping and a pipe wench and I knew it was not going to move so plan B. Plan B go to the auto parts store get some adapters and champs and hopefully with some cutting and welding I will have it together. Do any of you guys with 1550 utilities have this same fitting on yours? This sure threw me for a loop. I learned something new today, If you think you have it figured out, You Don't! Bandit

The manifold on mine has been modified by a previous owner. It has a welded on piece of pipe that the muffler is slipped over then clamped. From the looks of the weld the previous owner was not a welder by profession. Actually looks like some of my handywork but I didn't cobble this one up. Eventually will need to be cleaned up. Going to try baling with it tomorrow. Might be it's last chance to perform.....

My parts book shows that short adapter with a clamp and the muffler. Can't see the bottom of the muffler but it looks like it should fir over that adapter.

Ours might have had that ring at some time, but the manifold and pipe were replaced a long time ago. We just have a 6" or so pipe coming out of the manifold to the 88 muffler like you were planning on.
Nice to know that the restriction was already there and "normal."
I did have the 88 muffler inlet expanded a little to fit the pipe we used. Probably close to what you are looking at in your pictures. Just took it to a muffler shop and stretched it a little.
