1850 1000 RPM with 540 shaft?

Hooked up my Haybine today for the first time & realized this PTO is way to fast, is it possible to run a 540 shaft at 1000? I thought they made it so it wouldn't operate that way? How do I change it back now that its wrong? I'm guessing about 1100 RPM on my tractor is 540 PTO, just by the sound of the haybine...if I revved it up to 2400 I think it would explode!

It's possible that the 540 was forced in at one time breaking the button that would prevent shifting into 1000 with the 540 stub in it.

Should be able to just loosen the bolt holding the shifter and then while rotating the shaft with one hand push/pull the shifter to get it in the right gear if that button is broke.

What Don said is right. One time my neighbor had my 1850 on his corn picker. I had a
1000 rpm shaft in it. There was a 540 pto in the tool box. When he took the tractor he said he knew to change the shaft and he would do it. About 3 hours later he called me and said the corn picker was throwing a few ears over the wagon and seemed to be running to fast. I went over to his place and he said the 540 pto shaft would not go in. So, he took a sledge hammer and got it in. 1850 was pretty new then and I did not know much about it. So, we shifted the lower right shifter into the 540 slot. I figured something really broke in the tractor. But, we tried picking a few rounds and no problem. But, it sure was funny when he first showed me how the
New Idea picker worked at 1000 rpm.
I still have the tractor today and it still is used. This incident happened about 40 years ago.
Nevered bothered to fix the interlock and it never gave me any trouble.

Someone, maybe previous owner, removed the PTO unit and dismantled the interlock parts. Now all you need to do to change speeds is put the shifter in the 1000 or 540 position. It does not matter which shaft you have installed now.
