do I have to remove crankshaft gear to remove crank on F162

Cockshutt 540 with the F162 continental engine. I have removed the connecting rods and the main bearing caps. I want to remove the crankshaft but when I lift it, something is holding it from coming up at the front of the engine. In the parts book I see some kind of thrust washer and pin in the sketch. Does that pin go thru the washer and fit into the block, such that I have to pull the crank gear, then pull off that washer to lift crank?
I see the crank gear has threaded holes for a puller. Do I have to heat the crank gear before pulling or will it come free easily?.

Yes that pin is to retain the thrust washer and keep it from rotating. There may also be shims there which are used to adjust crankshaft end play. The holes in the gear are to attach a puller to. I sent you an e-mail. I take it you don't have either a Cockshutt or a Continental manual. Let me know if you get or do not receive the e-mail. J.

Just to complete this thread, I had a 2 jaw puller and took some 38 inch bolts and pulled the crank gear off the crank. Then removed 2 pieces, one being the washer with holes to align with pins in the block. The gear was not that tight, came easy with the puller. Thanks for the advice.

3/8 bolt. Correct?
