Oliver 80 magneto

My oliver 80 will run smooth as silk for about 5 minutes and will just die. After a few minutes it will start back up and run for a few more , my guess is something in the mag, its the original american Bosch and I wondered if anyone else had this problem and could help me narrow it down, thanks.

A mag either has spark or it doesnt soumds like fuel related issues to me but one can have a spark plug that you know works at the ready and when it dies pull #1 plug wire off and hook it up and set it against a good ground and give it a crank and check for spark and go from there. Hope that will start you into the right direction

It is very simple to check for spark when it dies.

That would tell you so simply whether you are barking up the right or wrong tree

Don't guess - diagnose the problem. There are not too many options and fuel is the favourite.

You could try pulling the choke control and see if it runs just a little longer.

I would guess and think fuel is the more likely, but that is back to guessing. Checking is better

Another easy check is to run fuel from the carb drain to see if the full fuel flow diminishes after a minute or so. If it reduces, you have evidence of a problem between carb and tank.

But do check. No point in suspecting the fuel system if there is no spark to ignite it.
