1550 Diesel

I'm about ready to start baling some hay-if this weather will ever shape up...
Oliver 1550 diesel is still giving me some trouble. Runs fine for whatever time and then all of a sudden the rpm will start to drop off. No matter what you do with the throttle it continues to decline and will in short order stop running. You can almost immediately restart it and it runs fine with good throttle response. Some have suggested that there is something blocking discharge at the tank. Well it has an electric fuel pump and with the key turned on the pump runs. So when it dies the pump continues to have power to it--so it does not relieve the suction from the tank. I think that means if something were to be blocking the discharge it would remain in place. I stuck on this running good, then quits, then restarts immediately and runs fine. May not do it again for several hours or might do it in just a few minutes. Going to be frustrating to bale with this thing, let alone pulling the baler down the road to get to some of my fields. Still looking for other possibilities---what do you think?

believe that the grovenor ring in the injector pump has busted and is plugging the return line to the tank
never had this problem however there have been quite a few posts on here about it
good luck

you can check for it being a plugged fuel return (IE junk governor drive ring)by removing everything from the top of the pump return port & put just a tube from the hole into a fuel can. Then run it. If the problem goes away, either the drive ring is junk or the fuel return is plugged between the pump & the tank.

I have same issue w/ 1555D.. have trash in bottom of tank,, some days it finds it's way to stop up tube that protrudes up into tank from settling bulb/etc. I need to REALLY clean tank to fix.. May be your issue too..

Next time it starts to die quickly loosten the two timing cover screws on the side of the pump. If the speed comes back up the return is getting plugged from the failing governor retainer ring and the pump needs serviced. Letting some fuel leak out of the housing relieves the high housing pressure so the pump will work. If run long enough the retainer pins will shear off, causing much more damage, usually locking up the rotor and breaking the drive shaft.

Seems like if it was a plugged fuel line/tank it would require re-priming the system. Not starting almost right away. The tank on my 1650 had a bunch of trash and rust in it and every time it would quit I had to reprime it.When I cleaned it out then it started leaking from about 10 pinholes in the tank bottom.Ended up cutting out the bottom and replacing it with heavier guage steel.

I changed the fuel filter. Cant really see in those but it didn't look bad. Took the sediment bulb off. Really crusty junk in it. the screen at the top was completely plugged up. So all put back together at this point. Ran ok and didn't act up. But that is not unusual. Time will tell if I still have an issue. I'm sure I will. Not that lucky.
