88 head question-cracked head?

Thinking about looking at an 88. Guy said it had a miss in it and figured it was the head gasket (odd place for a miss). Did the 88s ever crack heads on them? Thanks in advance.

Could be. But could be one of several alternative causes. In fact a lot of other reasons. A new head might be one of the more expensive repairs.

Think here of the simpler, cheaper possible causes - distributor cap, plug wire, plug cap, distributor cam or bearings, contact breaker gap. Just a few, before even before considering the non-ignition possibilities!

That is what I was thinking as well: plugs, wires, distributor cap etc. It made me think there might be more to it than just a "miss" if he thinks it might be the head gasket. Ive never really heard of a head gasket causing a "miss" but under the right conditions anything is possible. Did the 88 gas models ever have problems with cracked heads?

Speaking from experience, a blown head gasket between cylinders will cause a miss. A simple compression test will tell the story. good luck!
