1850 pto drive shaft

I think Ihave my old 1850 to the point of being ready for a shake down run if I could install the pto driveshaft. It starts in but stops with 25 inches sticking out. I have disengaged the pto lever and pushed on it while turning it back and forth. I even bumped the starter to try to line things up. It seems like its hitting a brick wall in there. I would appreciate any advice/help on this. Thanks,Lee

push it all the way back in and take an o-ring pick and pull that out- its in there a few inches. I think you'll be surprised how quick it will come out!

Its out and I am trying to get it back in, but would an old o ring keep it from going in? Thanks for the reply Lee

At about 25 inched to go,I think you'd be at about where the two drive sprockets come together where that chain drive is in the drive shaft.
Did that old guy get those lined up right when he took the engine out?

I don't know if he got them lined up correctly or not . How can I tell and what do I do to correct it if they are not. Thanks for the help Randy. Lee

Somebody else will have to give you a permanent fix,but to see,I'd loosen the rear motor mount bolts and see if you can slide it around a little. I think there's a threaded hole in the bottom of the frame where you can screw a bolt in against the bottom of the two speed and lift it up a little.

Thanks, I guess I will try that the first time I get a few extra minutes. I guess this is going to slow me down on finishing it a little. As if I wasn't already slow enough lol. Lee

Don't worry about the front mount. There's only one in front, right in the center and it has some give to it.

I just can't think what else it might be if it's going in that far and hitting something solid. You should already have the first set of splines through the pump drive.
Did you feel them go through those? You'll have the splines in the PTO clutch, then the ones in the pump drive and finally the ones in the flywheel. The one's in the center of the shaft will start in to the pump drive just before the front splines go in the flywheel hub.

First thing, take a good flashlight and look in the back of the tractor. You should be able to see a clear path all the way to the back of the crank. Check that the spacer between input and output chain coupler sprockets hasn"t dropped. Also, make sure the sprockets are aligned up and down, which can be adjusted with shim on the rear motor mounts or the bolt through the bottom of the tub frame under the aux drive. Whatever you do, don"t force it! The shaft does slide in smoothly with very little effort when things are lined up correctly.

I couldn't tell for sure if the pump splines engaged or not. I pulled it out and shined a light thru it and it looked pretty well in line. Worst thing is it will probably be Tuesday before I get a chance to tinker with it again. When I do I will post back. Its probably something stupid Im doing. Thanks again. Lee

I've got one of those shafts out in the shop. I just did some measuring.
I measured the 2 speed from about where the flywheel hub is,back to the chain coupler. That's around 20 inches.
The shaft though would give you just about that 25 inches sticking out of the back when the pump drive splines hit the clutch splines. I'm more inclined to believe that's what you're hitting.
The pump drive splines in the shaft are 39 inches from the front of the shaft,so I'm pretty sure you're through that.

Does it look like the splines in the clutches are all lined up the same?

Thanks so much Randy. I couldn't tell if those splines were lined up or not. I have a young man that helps me some and I think his vision is a little better than mine lol. I will get him to look and we will try a couple of other ways to check things. Lee

I fool with so many of those darned different things I tend to forget what's what, but the more I think,I believe that's just a hub with a single set of splines so it would have to be straight through of memory serves me right this time.

I hate to ask a foolish question, but you put the small end in first didn't you? The end with the two sets of splines closest together goes to the back. I'm embarrassed even asking that.

Yes I did put the smaller end in first. Don't be concerned about asking about that. I have probably done dumber things than that. I still figure it is some stupid mistake I am making. If you can think of any other foolish things I could have done let me know. Thanks,Lee

Lee, did you pull it back just a little when it came to a stop, then turn it a little then push it again? Might have to repeat it a few times.

I just hope we don't have to add letting me talk you in to buying that tractor to the list. LOL

It wont be Randy. This will be a good tractor and I don't think it will take a lot to get it that way. If Im wrong[and I have been on occasion lol] its like I told one fella I would rather have 15k in this tractor in top shape than 30k in a new one. Anyone can drive a new one,I feel blessed to be able to work on and drive my old ones. Lee

J. I didn't pull back I just pushed with a steady pressure and turned the shaft. I will try the method you describe. Thanks Lee
