Super 55 PTO questions

Just bought a 1955 super 55 and have used it for some field work this spring. I originally thought that the PTO was out of adjustment but I now think that where they mounted the remote for the hydraulics is in the way. It is mounted just in front of the PTO lever and it allows the PTO lever just about 2" of movement at the knob end. I think that the remote is mounted in the way. If so where does this remote truly go? Does it mount on the other fender? Does it mount on the right fender where it is and I still have a problem with the PTO. I guess I could remove it and find out but before I do that I thought I would ask. Anyone have pictures of one mounted I could see? With it in the way the PTO runs constantly. Would like it to be operable when I bush hog with it. Any help would be great.

An OEM remote valve would not be mounted on the fender. It would be mounted to the top cover just ahead of the 3 point quadrant. It seems that you will have to move your aftermarket remote valve somewhere else to allow you full travel on your PTO handle. Where you put it is entirely up to you.

Your PTO clutch discs are likely warped. The PTO lever should move to where you feel it "go over center" on the clutch. A lot of 55-550 PTO shafts run all the time but some can be stopped by hand. Don't try it by your self, hook something up to the PTO and see if it turns then or if that is enough to stop it. Post your serial number on the registry on this site. I have a 1955 super 55 diesel, Dad bought it new in May 1955.

The external hydraulic control should be mounted just to the right of your seat. Not that it should make any difference, but I thought a 1955 had the short handle without the knob to engage the PTO.

Maybe the short handle on the early 55s, Dad bought mine on May 20, 1955 and it has the long handle with the push down knob.

Due to the extra effort needed to engage the PTO clutch there was a conversion kit to remove the short handle and replace it with the long handle and then years later there was a kit to convert that handle to the front mounted handle.

Thanks guys for the incite. It may be best I take a picture and post it so it's clear what I ought to do. It sounds like this might be an after market remote from what you all say but it's the same color as the tractor and looks the age as well. However without a proper picture it's anyone"s guess. I posted the serial number here to find the date earlier. Will have to figure out how to put it in the registry.
