Blast from the Past... 88 RC vs. JD3010

Thought this would tickle you guys... Dad had an 88 RC Diesel when I was a kid. Also had a Super 55D. The Oliver dealership folded in '59, so he traded the old 88 in on a 'new' JD 3010 diesel. The man said it would do everything an 88 could, even better. Well.... it pulled the Oliver 4-14 trailer plow well enough, but it wouldn't have anything to do with the Oliver 12 foot disk with a levelling board in sandy ground. The John Deere man was flabbergasted that his 3010 would not out-pull an old worn out 88. HAHAHA!! Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 88 was a 40 horse tractor and the 3010 was a 50 horse. HAHAHA!! I still have the side panels off of the old 88. I have fond memories of that old 88... it was a real "hoss"

I was thinking that an 88 was somewhere in the nieghborhood of 45hp. Tratctor data has them rated at 43 on the belt. The 3010 is rated at 59 pto hp. The S-88 and the 880 were rated 55 hp on the belt and the 1600 was rated 57 PTO. So, in reality, the 3010 would be rated in the same range as a S-88/880/1600.

reminds me of a story i was told. a guy was cutting down trees and was using a John Deere 70 to pull the logs but he had a hill and the 70 couldn"t make it up. friend of his said he could help and 20 minutes later the 88 came over and was pulling those logs up the hill without a fuss. best part was the guy with the 70 heard the 88 coming and said, "damn he brought his 88."

My dad had a 3010 diesel when I was a kid. He bought it brand new. He pulled a 12 ft. John Deere RW disk leveling board and roller fine. Fifth gear with the disk and roller. Sixth gear disking stalks. He also pulled a 4-14 John Deere plow in fourth gear as I remember.

Soil makes a difference... this was sandy ground that fluffed up when plowed. The 3010 bogged down in the loose sand. Mr. Ellis brought in a brand new 4010 from the Eastern Shore of Va. the next week which pulled the disk fine and we ended up adding a fifth bottom to the plow. My JD 2510D pulled 4-14's but couldn't handle the 12 ft disk in plowed ground. Did fine in cornstalks. Ended up putting a 14ft IHC disk behind the 4010.

That's what the 88 was for us... a tillage tractor. It pulled the 2 row corn picker and was also belt power for the stationary peanut picker. The John Deere B's did cultivation while the Super 55 did the planting and dug peanuts. The combine had it's own engine, so any of the above, including an MB Jeep would supply pulling power for it. It was funny that in correctly terrible conditions the 4WD MB Jeep would pull the combine when nothing else would.
