head gasket sealer or not, which way?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm getting conflicting opinions on installing the head with a sealer or without. The shop manual from the '70's says use sealing compound but I have heard that with the newer gaskets it is not necessary to use a sealer. The tractor is a 1974 Oliver 1465. The head has been resurfaced. The block surface looks real good. The head gasket is copper on one side and gasket material on the other side. Also, I do not know which side of the gasket is up and the shop manual doesn't help. Thanks for any help.

Clearly the shop manual is far behind the technology advances. Follow the gasket manufacturers guides.

If your gasket is perfectly symetrical, front to back, you will need to consult the gasket manufacturer, or supplier perhaps.

I don't think you have the kind that doesn't require sealer. If the gasket is along the same principle as other gaskets the copper side would go on the side of the part that's going to be moved around, copper up.

It's rubber that's effected by compounds negatively, yours has none. I'm a plumber, I always use a sealing compound unless told directly not to, keeps me from returning because of a leak.

I'd also put the paper side down because the block is often not resurfaced and needs something that will fill better.

I'm guessing the copper is used because it expands with heat well and moves better with the metal parts that also expand and contract.

Got to be some instructions from the manufacturer.

Thanks a bunch! Good information. Oddly enough there is absolutely no instructions from the manufacturer.

Get some Permatex Copper head and exhaust gasket sealer (comes in a spray can). We put that on my 1955 when it blew the head gasket. When we pulled the motor down to major it, it took a 5 ton porta-power and 2 pry bars to take the head back off and it tore the gasket to shreads in the process. That stuff would probably almost seal the head off by itself. I highly recommend it!!

Sparex makes or distributes the gasket. I will call the guy that sold me the gasket and see if he knows or Sparex knows how their gasket should be installed.

So I take it you would suggest putting sealer on. The question remains, which side of the gasket goes up and which goes down. One side is copper and one side is plain gasket material. Thanks!

But don't put it on like he said. The key thing is where the push rods go. Can you send me a picture of your gasket and any numbers off the gasket? Is there a name on the gasket? The key to sealing the compression is liner protrusion. Send me an e-mail
