1600 Gas Engine Issue

I have been having an issue with my 1600 all spring. If I take off to fast it will die but it seems like it wont do it if I pull the choke out a little bit. The issue comes and goes, but seems to get worse as the engine warms up. Also if I rev the engine up to fast it will stumble once it reaches full throttle, and it takes it a minute to recover. It will do the same thing when I upshift the hydra-power. Lastly, when I was using it to disk every once in a while when I turned around on the end and started heading back across the field, it would start to gallop really bad when I hit the throttle or shifted the hydra-power, and the only way I could get it to quit was to idle it down and slowly rev it back up. Everything in the ignition system is new, and the carb has been rebuilt. We have checked the timing, tried adjusting the carb, and replaced the coil but nothing has eliminated the problem. I should mention the we did a complete out of frame overhaul on this tractor last winter. I have a really hard time thinking it is a fuel issue because it doesnt lack any power, and will still pull like an ox. About the only thing we havent checked is the governor. At this point we are stumped, what are your thoughts?

we had a 1600 and one thing that was very fusy on ours was the point gap ,than we converted it to propane and it was touchier yet, whatever the specs were we had to tighten them up a little just a idea

If it has a mixture enrichment system, I would be checking that. But cannot see that it would affect the fast idle for a full minute.

The 90 (on kero) had a similar problem when new; it would stall on take-off if not eased off carefully (allow gentle pick-up on the governor). Pain for Dad as it was crank start.

The simple fix (I remember it well) was to run a stiff wire from the choke back to the platform, so a short tug on it momentarily richened up the mixture enough to avoid the stall. Dad was right pleased with the contractor who told him of the fix. Tractor was 4 or 5 years old at the time and apparently had been like it most of its life.

We sold a bunch of 1600 gas tractors. Do check the voltage at the points. One problem we also had was a sticking needle in the carburetor especially with the Viton needle and seats. I would rig of a little tool to check and see what the fuel level is in the bowl. Of course I had a dynometer and I could watch that as I applied power and eased off of it. Your governor problem to me is the governor is calling for more fuel and it is not available at the carburetor. More questions give me a an e-mail. J.

I agree that it sounds like a carb or fuel issue. I had similar issues when I overhauled my 1600, but after rebuilding the carb it runs great. It's also got a Pertronics ignition kit in the distributor.

I had what sounds to be a similar issue. Finally found that the O-ring on the main jet screw was bad. Replaced and now runs like a sewing machine.
